High School Swimming Course Syllabus


Course Title: High School Swimming I & II

Course Description:

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop swimming skills, understand water safety, and engage in physical fitness through aquatic exercises. Students will learn various swimming strokes, improve their endurance, and gain knowledge of aquatic health and safety practices.


Course Objectives:

  • Develop proficiency in various swimming strokes including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
- Enhance physical fitness through swimming and aquatic exercises.
- Understand and apply principles of water safety and first aid.
- Demonstrate the ability to set and achieve personal fitness goals.


Michigan Content Standards and Benchmarks:

1. Physical Education Content Standard 1:
Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Benchmarks:
- Demonstrate proficiency in the four major swimming strokes.
- Execute proper turns and starts in competitive swimming.

2. Physical Education Content Standard 2:
Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, and strategies related to movement and performance.

Benchmarks:
- Understand and apply the principles of hydrodynamics in swimming.
- Analyze and improve personal swimming techniques using video feedback and peer assessment.

3. Physical Education Content Standard 3;
Participates regularly in physical activity.

Benchmarks:
- Engage in daily swim workouts to improve cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength.
- Track and reflect on personal fitness progress throughout the course.

4. Physical Education Content Standard 4:
Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Benchmarks:
- Perform fitness assessments to evaluate swimming endurance and strength.
- Set and achieve personal fitness goals related to swimming.

5. Physical Education Content Standard 5:
Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.*

Benchmarks:
- Follow pool safety rules and guidelines.
- Demonstrate good sportsmanship and teamwork during class activities.

6. Physical Education Content Standard 6:
Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.*

Benchmarks:
- Reflect on the benefits of swimming for physical and mental well-being.
- Participate in class discussions about the role of swimming in a healthy lifestyle.

Course Outline:

1. Introduction to Swimming:
- Orientation to the pool and equipment
- Basic water safety and first aid

2. Stroke Development:
- Freestyle (Front Crawl)
- Backstroke
- Breaststroke
- Butterfly

3. Advanced Techniques:
- Starts and turns
- Diving techniques
- Interval training and pacing

4. Fitness and Conditioning:
- Endurance training
- Strength and flexibility exercises
- Goal setting and progress tracking

5. Safety and Lifeguarding:
- Water safety practices
- Basic lifeguarding skills
- Emergency response procedures

6. Assessment and Reflection:
- Performance evaluations
- Fitness assessments
- Reflection on personal progress and goals

Assessment Methods:

- Skill demonstrations and technique assessments
- Participation and effort in swim workouts
- Fitness progress tracking
- Written quizzes on water safety and first aid

Materials Required:
- Swimwear (suit, goggles, swim cap)
- Towel
- Water bottle
- Notebook for tracking progress

Grading Policy: (Still in development)
- Skill Demonstrations: 40%
- Participation and Effort: 30%
- Fitness Assessments: 20%
- Quizzes and Written Work: 10%

Policies:
- Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial for skill development. Notify the instructor in advance of any absences.
- Safety: Follow all pool rules and guidelines. Report any injuries or safety concerns immediately.
- Dress Code: Appropriate swimwear must be worn at all times. No jewelry or loose clothing in the pool.
