Locomotor Skills

I can...

Third Grade:

perform the following locomotor skills without a break in the pattern for 40 feet:    
  • Run
  • Hop (right and left foot)
  • Horizontal Jump
  • Skip
  • Slide
  • Gallop
  • Leap Step
  • Hopscotch

Fourth Grade:

perform the following locomotor skills without a break in the pattern for 45 feet:    
  • Run
  • Hop (right and left foot)
  • Horizontal Jump
  • Skip
  • Slide
  • Gallop
  • Leap Step
  • Hopscotch

Fifth Grade:

perform the following locomotor skills without a break in the pattern for 50 feet:    
  • Run
  • Hop (right and left foot)
  • Horizontal Jump
  • Skip
  • Slide
  • Gallop
  • Leap Step
  • Hopscotch

Skipping Instructions:

  • Jump off your right foot and land on your right foot as your left arm is bent at a 90° angle at the elbow and swings for the sky.
  • When you land take a step with your left foot then jump off your left foot and land on your left foot as your right arm is bent at a 90° angle at the elbow and swings for the sky.
  • Repeat these steps

Galloping Instructions:

With the Right Foot Forward

  • Start your right foot in front of your left foot with both arms bent at a 90° angle at the elbow.

  • Keeping your right foot in front of your left foot, step with your right foot and jump off your left foot land land on your right foot then transferring your weight back to your left foot and then repeating this process always keeping your right foot in front of your left foot.

  • During this whole process your arms will swing together. (not opposite of each other)

With the Left Foot Forward

  • The same process only keeping your left foot forward and your right foot back

Sliding Instructions:

To the Right


  • Move laterally to your right stepping with your right foot and then sliding your left foot next to your right without crossing or touching your feet.

To the Left

  • The same process only moving to your left

One Foot Hop:

Right Foot Hop

  • Jump on your right foot and land on your right foot while your left leg is bent behind you.

  • Keep both arms bent at a 90° angle at the elbow.

Left Foot Hop

  • Jump on your left foot and and land on your left foot while your right leg is bent behind you.

  • Keep both arms bent at a 90° angle at the elbow.

Horizontal Jump:

  • With both feet shoulder width apart jump as high and as far as you can and land with both feet hitting the ground at the exact same time. (Remember to not take any steps between jumps. Jump from the exact spot that you land.)

  • As you are jumping both arms are bent at a 90° angle behind your body and swing forward as you jump.

  • Then repeat

Leap Step:

  • Jump off your left foot and land on your right foot and then bring your feet together. Now jump off your right foot and land on your left foot and bring them together.

  • Repeat this process

  • Right to left together-left to right together-right to left together - left to right together

​Hop Scotch:

  • Jump landing on two feet at the same time and then jump off two feet and land onto to one foot. Repeat this pattern, but be sure to alternate the 1 foot that you land on.

  • Two feet, right foot, two feet, left foot - Two, Right, Two, Left
