THROWING and CATCHING

I can...

Kindergarten:
  • throw a ball with correct form to a partner who is standing still with accuracy 3 out of 5 times from a distance of 10 feet.
  • catch a ball that is thrown accurately 3 out of 5 times.

First Grade:
  • throw a ball with correct form to a partner who is standing still with accuracy 3 out of 5 times from a distance of 15 feet.
  • catch a ball that is thrown accurately 3 out of 5 times.

Second Grade:
  • throw a ball with correct form to a partner who is standing still with accuracy 3 out of 5 times from a distance of 20 feet.
  • catch a ball that is thrown accurately 3 out of 5 times.​

Overhand Throwing Instructions:

"T" - "L" - Step & Rotate- Throw - Follow Through

  1. "T"- Form a "T" with your body while holding the ball farthest from your target.
  2. "L"- Form a "L" with your arms by bending the elbow of your throwing arm.
  3. Step & Rotate - Step with the opposite foot of your throwing arm toward your target. Rotate your hips and shoulders so that they are square to your target.
  4. Throw - Move your arm forward and release the ball as soon as it gets past your nose.
  5. Follow Through - Let your throwing arm follow through all the way down to the knee of the leg that you stepped with.​

Catching Instructions:

               Reach, Give & Bring it into your basket
  1. Keep your eye on the flight of the ball.
  2. Reach for the ball with your hands. Thumbs together if the ball if above your waist and pinky fingers together if the ball if below your waist.
  3. When the ball hits your hands "give" and bring it into your "basket."

Underhand Roll/Throw

Kindergarten
  • underhand roll/throw a ball/bean bag with correct form to a target 6 out of 10 times from a distance of 5 feet.

1st Grade
  • underhand roll/throw a ball/bean bag with correct form to a target 6 out of 10 times from a distance of 7 feet.

2 nd Grade
  • underhand roll/throw a ball/bean bag with correct form to a target 5 out of 10 times from a distance of 9 feet.

Underhanded Roll Instructions

  • Step with your opposite foot as you bring your throwing arm back below your waist.
  • When your arm reaches its farthest point back underhand throw/roll the ball/beanbag in a forward motion.
  • Follow through and point to your target with your throwing arm
